Serena Williams is back all over the news. This time, it’s because of her GQ “Woman” of the Year cover.

The male dominated magazine decided to shake things up a bit from their annual Man of the Year issue by awarding the professional tennis player her own cover and the title of Woman of the Year. However, the fellas are not too happy.

Although she is known for her athletic career, Williams has been targeted for her body and appearance. Tabloids and social media users have made it as far as spreading rumors of her looking and even being born as a man.

“I’ve been called a man because I appeared outwardly strong. It has been said I don’t belong in women’s sports-that I belong in men’s because I look stronger than many other women do. No, I just work hard and I was born with this badass body and proud of it.” Williams explained.

For years, she has fought to be seen as equal in this male dominating world and sport. She has been ridiculed, targeted and pressed against for a lot of things while being a strong African American woman in sports. She is always advocating for equal rights amongst women of color. Couple months ago, she got into a huge debate during the US Open finals with umpire Carlos Ramos due to accusations of coaching during the game.

Williams believes that it’s more than just her being featured on the cover. She believes that apart of it has to due with race. Previously, Gal Gadot was also named Woman of the Year for GQ and there was no debate, talk or issue about it. To take it a step further, if you notice on the cover, the word “Woman” is in quotation marks. Do you think they were trying to stipulate something after all?

All in all, she looks great on the cover. She is a role model to several young women as they grow up to learn how love themselves for who they are. She is an example of not sticking to the status quo due to things such as race or gender when it comes to achieving your goals. Serena Williams deserves to be Woman of the Year and if the fellas are mad, screw em.
