Self Care Tips for African American Women
Black girl magic is REAL.
We’re literally running things. From starting our own businesses to having professional careers in fields such as politics and entertainment, African American women are breaking all barriers. We are overcoming obstacles that were made for us to fail in society.
Oftentimes we tend to neglect ourselves. We are constantly worrying about others, that we completely forget to make sure we’re mentally and physically stable. Due to self neglect, we burn ourselves out.
Self-care includes taking care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. As African American women, we have to learn that it is okay to take a break every now and then. We need to show ourselves some TLC because if you don’t, who else will? We all need a break to regroup and clear our thoughts. It’s important and crucial that we do not lose ourselves and forget our value.
Lauryn Hill once said, “How you gonna win, when you ain’t right within?”
You must always be in-tuned with your mind, body and soul at all times. Dedicate time and attention to things that matter the most to you. Show yourself some love for a change. Your next day off, I want you to give yourself a well pampered day. Spend time alone. Catch up on your favorite tv shows. Go to a spa. Have dinner alone. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you are doing something that relaxes and focuses on YOU.
Here are five great tips to help you with self care:
1. Practicing daily affirmations.
Daily affirmations are a way for you to stay positive. You’re speaking things into existence. Throw away all those negative thoughts that are keeping you behind. You become more motivated and less stressed out. You’ll notice the different outlook on life and on others. Practicing these affirmations can boost your confidence tremendously. All in all, they can help push you closer to your goals.
2. Take a mental health day at least once a week.
Everyone needs a day to themselves. Where you can put your thoughts together. Get your priorities in order. It helps with reducing stress and you feel refreshed when it’s over. You can be as productive as you want or you can by catching up on sleep you’ve been missing. You won’t regret it. If taking a mental health day once a week is too much, then try once a month and work your way up.
3. Learn how to say NO.
Easier said than done huh? Saying no doesn’t mean you’re a total b*tch so don’t let people make you feel guilty about it. Learn how to separate refusal from rejection. You’re not saying no to the person, just their request. There should be no hard feelings, just a better understanding and level of respect.
4. Treat yourself.
Whether it’s a spa day, getting your hair and nails done or going on a shopping spree. DO IT. I mean, what’s better than retail therapy, right?
5. Get in tune spiritually.
Take some time out of your day to pray or meditate. Getting spiritually awakened promotes a more positive mentality. Take the time to reflect on your life and ways you can improve it.
